Treatment
Techniques
In my massage therapy tool box, I have a number of skills and techniques that I draw upon. Every massage is different; dependent upon the goals of treatment, depends on the type of massage. The following is a list of modalities and techniques that I have learned and that I draw upon.

Myofascial Release:
• Myofascial Release is an effective technique that provides a whole-body, hands-on approach of evaluation AND treatment.
• Myofascial Release focuses on the fascial system
• The purpose of Myofascial Release is to stretch and loosen tightened layers of fascia to relieve pain, to restore tissue equilibrium, and to restore function
• Myofascial Release helps to improve vertical alignment and to lengthen the body which provides more space for the structures within that area

Trigger Point Therapy:
• Trigger points are hyper-irritable localized myofascial tissue that perpetuates the pain-tension cycle and can lead to sustained muscle contraction & weakness
• Trigger points are often associated with repetitive strain injuries, poor posture, headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome, back pain, TMJ, vertigo, and sinus pain

Sports Massage:
• Sports massage is tailor-made to each individual athlete
• Pre-event massage is a fast, superficial treatment with the sole goal being to increas blood flow to the muscles, thereby warming the muscle up.
• Post-event massage is a slower and deeper treatment with the focus being on flushing out metabolites (toxins) that have accumulated, thereby the recovery rate is much quicker
• Athletes should receive regular treatments to help restore balance and to deter overuse injuries from happening. Athletic performance can have heartbreaking consequences if joints, ligaments, tendons, and muscles are not maintained.

Hydrotherapy:
• The use of water, internally or externally, in any of its three forms – liquid, solid, or vapour – has been used for thousands of years in the prevention, treatment, or healing of any ailment, disease, defect, or condition
• Readily available evidence that hydrotherapy works is by watching a wounded animal. Wild animals, when hurt, often turn to water, as if this was nature’s own hospital
• At JEM Massage Therapy, we use a thermaphore (heat), paraffin wax (heat), ice packs, and a specific massage, the Hot & Cold Stone Massage

Muscle Energy Techniques:
• Muscle energy is a technique that uses the client’s own muscles to help reset the muscle
• Muscle energy helps to increase range of motion and to help increase the extensibility of the tissue around joint structures

Joint Mobilization:
• Joint mobilizations are used in conjunction with other techniques to help increase range of motion, decrease pain, and to release or to help decrease adhesions around the joint

Craniosacral Technique:
• Craniosacral is a gentle, non-invasive technique used to help the body find its natural rhythm, thereby restoring balance and relieving pain

Manual Lymphatic Drainage:
• Edema is a local or general accumulation of fluid in the spaces between our cells. It is not a disease but it is a secondary response to trauma, systemic disease, or obstruction of the lymphatic vessels
• MLD® is a technique that is a methodical, specific treatment designed to work specifically with the lymphatic system
• Only individuals trained in MLD® are allowed to perform the technique
• MLD® is the most effective way to treat edema

Reflexology:
• Reflexology is a natural healing art based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet, hands, and ears that correspond to every part, gland, and organ of the body
• Reflexology helps to relieve tension, improve circulation, and to help restore the natural function of the related areas of the body

Hot & Cold Stone Massage:
• Hot & Cold Stone Massage uses both hot basalt (lava) stones and cold marble stones within a temperature range of 32 – 140 degrees
• 50 basalt rocks, each shaped by nature to suit a particular body area, are heated and used in a specific sequence in conjunction with the cold, marble stones
• Hot & Cold Stone Massage helps to relieve chronic pain, promotes deep relaxation, and to help revitalize the body
